Trips
Many trips are organised under the auspices of Tonbridge u3a. Some of these are arranged within groups for example the Discovering Churches group but some are open for all members to apply for places.
The Theatre Visits Team arrange several theatre visits a year. We aim to provide a varied programme covering serious drama, comedies and musicals. These are usually matinees and mostly in London when we travel by train, either independently or as a group. We occasionally include a visit to a local venue. Theatre trips are available to all members.
The Travel Team
During the last twenty five years the travel team arranged many holidays and outings. Members greatly appreciated these trips.
The management committee would be pleased to hear from any member (or members) who would like to form a new travel team.
Coastal Walks Group 1
Coach trip to Malden
Tuesday 10 September 2024 - £18.50 per person
Maldon is one of the oldest recorded towns in Essex and is situated on the Blackwater estuary wherein flow two rivers and a navigation canal. The High Street is very interesting with many unique shops and old buildings, Maldon houses and many of the remaining Thames Barges.
The Trip – is open to members of Tonbridge u3a and is mainly for walkers, but non walkers can spend the day in Maldon unsupervised. There will be a choice of two walks in the morning and a short one in the afternoon.
The Morning Walk - option 1 - 3 miles approx. This walk goes along the towpath of the peaceful Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation canal and then along the River Blackwater, before heading to the High Street, where you are then free to explore the town and have lunch.
The Morning walk - option 2 - 5-6 miles approx. This option is intended for those who like a longer walk at a moderate pace, with a packed lunch on route. The walk takes us along the towpath of the peaceful Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation canal and then along the River Blackwater to Beeleigh Falls. This lovely area has locks, falls and weirs. We return to Maldon, passing Beeleigh Mill & Beeleigh Abbey ruins. See Terrain notes.
Afternoon walk - 1 1⁄2 miles approx. This more vibrant walk, follows the river Chelmer and passing historical barges,
before reaching Promenade Park.
Terrain: Both the shorter morning walk and the afternoon walk, are mainly flat but with occasional gentle uphill slopes. There will be some dirt paths and uneven areas. There are also a few steps. Sensible shoes advisable. The longer morning walk is mainly flat, but towards the end there is a long upward slope. Steps on/off wooden bridges over weirs and rivers. Uneven dirt paths with exposed roots etc., maybe muddy. Walking boots recommended.
Travel Policy - You must bring and provide us with your mobile number for emergencies. Neither Tonbridge u3a nor the organisers, will accept responsibility for any mishap of whatever nature during the outing; you are advised to consider personal insurance cover. If anyone has physical, health or mental problems, they must travel with someone who will care for their well being.
